An organization's 100, 50, or
10 senior leaders often have different understandings
of the enterprise's strategy and lack clarity of their
personal or unit's role in ensuring success. Consider
the following:
Test our perspective by experimenting
with the following 10-minute exercise in your next
senior leadership team meeting . . . without advance
warning:
First
- Have each leader describe THE strategy on one
side of a 3x5 card.
Second
- Have the same leaders describe their personal role
in delivering THE strategy on the back of the
same 3x5 card.
Third
- Have your leadership team, or an outside expert,
analyze the responses and objectively map the gaps.
In most instances, the responses will clearly establish
the need for strengthened leadership, goals, focus,
and alignment. The next steps become clear:
Quantify strategic goals and implementation plans
Close talent and effectiveness gaps
Establish a roadmap for change and a change
management
process
We are encouraged that enterprises are
developing and refining creative, time-tested techniques
for quickly and more effectively aligning and engaging
critical leaders.
