Information and technology infrastructures are complex
and expensive. They must be competently and creatively
deployed
and
optimized.
They must provide scalability, reliability, recoverability,
and fast-track responsiveness to changing business conditions.
Technology enhances or constrains the pace and shape of change. Technology is the thread or nervous system that connects all aspects of strategic change and it is inseparably connected to, and connects, people.
Technology is now equal to people as the most complex and important consideration in the implementation of strategic change.
Evolving technologies and their applications
are driving a sea change in EVERY aspect of strategy
design and implementation. Day by day, technology is
changing forever the way we operate business-to-business
and business-to-customer processes and relationships.
When planning and leading the implementation of strategic change, devote the necessary talent and financial resources to technology.
A Suggestion
Strategy design and implementation teams should include technology talent responsible for identifying and addressing all of the possible technological opportunities and impediments in planned strategic initiatives.
Three
Notes of Caution
- Be sensitive to how much technology change people can digest in a single strategic initiative.
- Be sensitive and realistic about technology
people – their time, talent, and capacity to focus on implementing strategic initiatives.
- Be cognizant and clearheaded about "technology
reality" and the capacity of your technology
colleagues, vendors, and partners.
